Polymer Materials and Engineering

1. Introduction

Founded in 1997, Polymer Materials and Engineering major of Jiangnan University originated from subjects including Colloid and Interface Chemistry, Plastic Processing and Packaging Engineering of the former Wuxi College of Light Industry. It began formal student recruitment in 1999. Based on the needs of domestic light chemical industries (coatings, ink, adhesives, green plastics, functional materials, packaging materials and so on) and our university features, we set up three characteristic directions: “Coating Science and Engineering”, “Green Polymer Materials Engineering” and “Functional Polymer Materials”, instead of three conventional polymer materials and engineering programs—the plastic, rubber and fiber directions. In 2006, it was approved as the special major establishment site of Jiangsu Province and as the special major establishment site of China in 2010. It was granted level 1 right of awarding master degrees for materials science and engineering in 2011. It was selected as a key major of “the Twelfth Five-Year Plan” Higher Institutions in Jiangsu Province in 2012. In the ESI global university disciplines ranking of USA, Materials supported by this major has achieved the top 1%.

With the reputation in the academic society and chemical industries, the major has served as a member unit of the National Advisory Committee on Teaching Polymer Materials and Engineering in Higher Institutions under the Ministry of Education, council member of China National Coatings Industry Association, council member of Fine Chemical Committee of Chemical Industry and Engineering Society of China, vice-chairman of RadTech China of Chinese Society for Imaging Science and Technology and executive member of the council of Jiangsu Composite Society for several years. Over a decade of development, the polymer materials and engineering has gradually transformed from teaching-oriented, teaching and research-oriented major into research-oriented. Today it has formed a quite competitive and characteristic cultivation system in the fields of macromolecular colloids, coating science and engineering, functional polymers and composite materials, and green polymers materials processing. Through unremitting efforts, Polymer Materials and Engineering passed the engineering education professional certification in 2017, which means that it has achieved international substantial equivalence, and has entered the “top grade” of global engineering education.

The dedicated faculty team of Polymer Materials and Engineering is reasonable and consists of 27 members including 9 professors (6 doctoral tutors) and 16 associate professors. In the team 26 teachers have got doctor’s degree and 18 teachers have got overseas background. Moreover, there are one of New Century Excellent Talents in University of Ministry of Education, 7 elites of Talents Training Project containing 333 Project and Six Talent Peaks in Jiangsu Province.

Great attention has been attached to teaching work in Polymer Materials and Engineering. It effectively implements the basic concepts such as "student-centered", "output-oriented" and "continuous improvement" advocated by the Engineering Education Certification in the personnel training system. It upholds to the principles of combination of theory and practice teaching, mutual promotion of teaching and scientific research, associations of Universities and Enterprises. Meanwhile, it continuously explores advanced concept of teaching, carries out teaching reform and promotes laboratory construction and management, resulting in greatly improvement of teaching level andpersonnel training quality. Up to date, it has been awarded many prizes including Teaching Achievement Award of Jiangsu Province, China Petroleum and Chemical Education Research Award, Teaching Reform Project of Jiangsu Province, Excellent Teaching Materials of Jiangsu Province.

To cultivate their creativity and research ability, the undergraduates have been encouraged to learn academic forefront, inspire interests and increase initiative. In addition, Polymer Materials and Engineering implements the "professional teacher class system" and "professional tutor system". And the teachers fully participate in the student's academic planning, research training and innovation and guidance work. Based on a province-level Chemical Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center of Institution of Higher Education and a Comprehensive Training Center for Materials Science and Engineering, up to now, 100% of undergraduates undertake a lot of Training Programs of Innovation at college, provincial and national level. The undergraduates of Polymer Materials and Engineering have won awards of "Challenge Cup" National Science and Technology College of extra-curricular academic competition for four consecutive years (12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th sessions).

Polymer Materials and Engineering also focuses on scientific research and innovation. Based on several scientific research platforms, including a National Center for International Research for China-Australia Joint Research Center for Functional Molecular Materials, a Key Laboratory of Synthetic and Biological Colloids from Ministry of Education, the Base of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities for Innovations of Functional Molecules, Aggregates and Devices approved by the Ministry of Education and State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the faculties undertakes more than 60 scientific research programs including National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key Technology R&D Program, Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Province and enterprise cooperation projects, depending on several platforms possessed by our school such as International Joint Research Centre and Key Laboratory of Ministry of Science and Technology. At present, approximate 300 papers including over 200 SCI papers have been published at home and abroad.

Polymer Materials and Engineering has strengthened the international exchanges and cooperation, which accelerated the internationalized process for enhancing the students’ international field of vision. Relying on the resources of Jiangnan University and School of Chemical and Material Engineering, it has built extensive and close academic bonds with many oversea universities and institutes, including universities and institutes from the United States, France, Germany, England, Japan, Singapore, Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, etc. In recent 5 years, scores of undergraduates have studied in oversea universities supported by student exchange program, such as University of California, Davis, University of Tennessee, University of Hull; and dozens have studied in or visited universities of Hong Kong and Taiwan supported by Summer and winter vacation travel plans. In addition, it has become a routine work that teachers go abroad to study in universities and attend academic conferences.

Now Polymer Materials and Engineering has enrolled about 370 undergraduates and recruits about 93 undergraduates every year. More than 40% of the graduates can continue education for a master’s degree or a doctor’s degree, which is always in the forefront of the university. The average employment rate of graduates is more than 98%. Many students are employed by famous enterprises such as BASF, Henkel, Covestro, Amko, Nippon, Akesu, Shell.

2. Academic Objectives

For the locality and the nation, Polymer Materials and Engineeringaims to cultivate high-level engineering and technical personnel who could systematically master the basic knowledge, and experimental skills of Polymer Materials and Engineering, with safety and environmental awareness and international perspective. The students possess good ideological quality, humanities and social sciences and professional ethics, can have the ability to scientifically innovate, learn, and adapt to development. In addition, the students are qualified for the work of research and development, teaching, development of new products, new technology and new process, application, production and quality management in materials, chemicals, machinery and other related fields.

After the undergraduate training as well as further study and training at the work post after graduation, students of this major should have the following abilities after graduating for about 5 years:

Goal 1: Ability to apply knowledge of polymer materials and engineering expertise to provide solutions for complex polymer engineering problems.

Goal 2: Ability to undertake R&D and implementation of polymer-related products and processes, and provide technical support for the operation and management of engineering projects.

Goal 3: Have strong organizational and leadership skills, ability to abide by engineering norms and professional ethics, and management of engineering projects from legal, economic, and environmental aspects.

Goal 4: Have good humanistic qualities, strong team spirit and collective sense of honor, and be able to communicate effectively with colleagues and team members.

5. Advantages and Features

Based on the needs of the domestic polymer materials industry and the characteristics of the school’s light industry, Polymer Materials and Engineering develops two characteristic features. One is coating science and technology mainly including research and teaching of deep photo curable resins, functional coatings, inks, which is developed from the traditional colloid chemistry; The other is polymer materials processing engineering mainly including research and teaching of packaging materials, bio-based polymer materials, and polymer nanocomposites. The direction of coating science and technology forms an important support for the paint and ink industry, and the processing direction of polymer materials has promoted the development of the polymer packaging industry and the rubber and plastics products industry.
